Retire the
workbook.

v12. Twelve versions of one file. Enough.

Spreadsheets are brilliant for working things out. They are dangerous for running a business.

Almost every growing business starts on spreadsheets, and that is sensible. The trouble starts when a workbook becomes the system: shared over email, edited by several people, held together with macros and one person's knowledge. Formulas break silently, versions multiply, and nobody is sure which copy is right.

We study how your spreadsheets are really used, keep the logic that works, and rebuild it as a proper web application: one database, controlled access, automatic calculations, a full history of changes, and reports at the click of a button. Your team keeps the familiar shape, without the risk.

How we replace them

A careful migration that keeps your know-how and removes the fragility.

Understand the workbook

We map every sheet, formula and macro, and talk to the people who use them, so nothing important is lost and the odd workarounds get explained.

  • Formula and macro audit
  • Who uses what, and when
  • The rules hidden in people's heads

Rebuild as a system

Your data moves into a proper database with forms, validation and permissions. Calculations run the same way every time, for every user.

  • Multi-user, no locked files
  • Validation stops bad data at entry
  • Full audit trail of changes

Keep Excel where it helps

Export to Excel whenever you want to analyse, and import from it when partners send data. Excel becomes a tool again, not the system.

In their words

Carolyn Thornley-Yates

Head of Mortgage Proposition & Distribution, Hinckley & Rugby Building Society

“A system which is used all day every day and has improved operational efficiency and insight.”

We engaged Evgeny to create a bespoke piece of software for managing workflow, measuring capacity and producing MI. The project was smooth, pain free and delivered promptly. Evgeny brought many ideas for functionality over and above the brief and we were very pleased with the end result, a system which is used all day every day and has improved operational efficiency and insight.

Questions, answered

When should a business stop using spreadsheets?

When several people need to edit the same data, when the spreadsheet drives orders, prices or stock, when errors are costing money, or when only one person understands how it works. Those are signs the spreadsheet has become a system and needs to be built like one.

Can you convert our Excel spreadsheet into a web app?

Yes. We analyse the workbook, keep the business logic that works, move the data into a secure database and build screens around how your team uses it. Most clients find the new system familiar from day one.

What happens to our existing data?

We clean and migrate it, checking totals and records against the originals before you switch over. Nothing is lost, and you can still export to Excel whenever you like.

Is it better to buy software or build from our spreadsheet?

If a package fits your process closely, buy it. If your spreadsheet exists because no package fits, a bespoke system built from it usually serves you better. We will say so if we think a product would do the job.

How risky is moving away from spreadsheets?

Less risky than staying on them. We run the new system alongside the spreadsheet until the figures match and the team is confident, then switch over.

What's slowing you down?

A free, no-obligation conversation with Evgeny, the person who would build it. Over coffee in Shrewsbury, on your shop floor or on a call. You will leave with at least one idea you can use, whether or not we work together.
